Project Description

Hermes+ is a platform for emergency services that utilized 5G communications, edge-computing, and lidar sensor data to detect real-time traffic accidents and automatically dispatch emergency services.

During the 2-day Rogers/Microsoft 5G Smart City Hackathon, my team focused on solving the problem of long response times for paramedics in Canada. We are excited to win Third Place in this event and our project has been selected to go through a 4-month collaboration project with both Rogers Communications and the City of Kelowna.

Our Team

Our team consists of four members, Li Ze Choo, Crystal Lee, Jackson Yuan, and myself.

Our Solution

Hermes+
Hermes+, a platform for emergency services to reduce response times

We were inspired to embark on this project as we observed the inefficiencies in the dispatch time for emergency services globally. Furthermore, the advancement of 5G and Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC) technologies caught our attention, as they offer high bandwidth and low latency connections. With this in mind, we saw an opportunity to utilize these capabilities to tackle a societal problem and potentially save lives by creating a platform, Hermes+. This platform utilizes LiDar technology to monitor real-time traffic accidents and quickly dispatch emergency services over the 5G network.

Conclusion

Although this is not my first time participating in a Hackathon before, this year is different due to COVID-19 and the event was held online instead.

During the hackathon, we discovered the potential of 5G networks in revolutionizing device usage with their low latency and high bandwidth capabilities. With this insight, we created Hermes+, an emergency services platform utilizing LiDar technology to detect and respond to real-time traffic accidents over a 5G network.

I am immensely grateful for the experience not only for the opportunity to learn from my team's diverse skill sets, but also for the democratic approach we took in decision-making. A special thank you to all the sponsors, facilitators, mentors, and volunteers who made this virtual event possible.
